Policy Changes

Over the next few months the Garfield County School Board will be amending the District’s “Employee Background Check Policy”.   In the April Board meeting the suggested policy changes will be found under the Board Discussion items on the Board Docs program athttp://www.boarddocs.com/ut/garfield/Board.nsf.   To provide the safest environment possible for our students, policy changes that will be considered by the Board may include, but are not limited to, background checks for volunteers, chaperones, presenters, and contracted service personnel. All District employees are currently required to submit to background checks before they are allowed to be in the presence of any students or to be employed by the District. Teachers must complete background checks each time they renew their license with the Utah State Office of Education. Career teachers must complete a background check every five years and every three years for provisional employees. Classified employees such as custodians, lunch workers, para-educators and bus drivers must complete background checks every six years under the current District policy. The District welcomes public comments on policies and policy development. If you have suggestions or questions on this policy or any District policy, please feel free to contact myself or any member of the School Board. The District will strive to continue to provide a safe environment for all students.
